About Weed Control

What is on this site

This site is a guide to growing plants—from the first seed in the soil to the harvest. It covers everything that matters to gardeners: how to start, what to plant, when to prune, and how to troubleshoot when things go wrong. The focus is on practical advice, not theory.

Every tip, tool, or technique is chosen because it has worked in a real garden, not just in a textbook.

The site is organised by season and plant type. You’ll find guides for spring sowing, summer pruning, and autumn soil prep, along with dedicated sections for vegetables, flowers, and perennials. Each page follows the same structure: clear steps, precise timings, and honest notes on what might go wrong.

No fluff, no guesswork—just what you need to know to grow things successfully.

How to read a page here

Every page starts with a clear title and a short summary of what you’ll learn. Numbers in brackets—like (30 mins)—tell you how long a task takes, and measurements are always in both metric and imperial units.

If a step has a warning or a pro tip, it’s highlighted in a box so you don’t miss it.

The main body of the page is split into sections: *Preparation*, *Planting*, *Care*, and *Harvest*. Each section has its own heading, and bold terms link to a glossary if you’re unsure what they mean.

Photos show real gardens, not staged setups, so you can see what success (and failure) looks like in practice.

At the end of each page, you’ll find a *Quick Check* list—key things to remember—and a *Further Reading* section with links to related guides. Skip the glossary and further reading on your first read, but bookmark the *Quick Check* for later.

When it does not work

A roast that went wrong, dry and split

Some pages assume you have basic tools or a specific climate. If your garden gets heavy frost or your soil is rocky, not every tip here will apply. Also, some plants—like heirloom varieties—need extra care that isn’t covered in general guides.

Before you give up, double-check the *Plant Guides* for your specific species, and look for the ‘For Your Region’ tags on seasonal pages.

Before you give up

  • Check if your plant is in the right season for your climate (e.g., frost-sensitive crops in winter)
  • Verify your soil type—sandy, clay, or loamy—matches the guide’s assumptions
  • Look for regional tags or comments from other gardeners in your area
  • Try the *Troubleshooting* section for symptoms like wilting or discoloration

Who we are

Xavier Mensah
The colophon
Written byXavier Mensah, who has spent twenty years growing vegetables, flowers, and weeds in a small urban plot and a rented allotment, learning from failures as much as successes
Tested inA north-facing raised bed in London (zone 8a), a south-facing greenhouse in rural Devon (zone 8b), and a balcony in Barcelona (zone 10a)
Written withA trowel, a moisture meter, a notebook, and a camera that always runs out of battery at the worst moment
Learned fromA Ghanaian farmer who showed me how to read soil by touch, and my grandfather, who swore by ‘letting the weeds tell you what the earth needs’
Still getting wrongThe exact moment to harvest a pepper—sometimes it’s too early, sometimes too late, and the plant always knows better

Gardening is half science, half patience, and all about paying attention to the small things. If you’ve ever pulled a weed and found another one growing where it fell, or watched a seedling push through concrete just to reach the light, you know what this is about.

The goal here isn’t perfection—it’s resilience.

If you need something that is not here

This site covers the basics of growing, but not every plant or every problem. If you’re looking for advice on bonsai, hydroponics, or rare orchids, or if you’ve tried everything and your garden still refuses to cooperate, the *contact page* is where to ask.

Include details like your location, soil type, and what you’ve already tried—and we’ll point you to the right answer, even if it’s not on this site.

The guides are grouped by category: Advice, Aphids, Blooming, Companion Plants, Container Gardens and Diseases.
